Salvator Mundi
Author : Domenico Piola (Genova 1627 - 1703)
Period: 17th century
A stunning carved and gilded wooden frame houses an equally stunning canvas by the Genoese painter Domenico Piola depicting "Salvator Mundi," or the representation of Jesus Christ as Savior of the World. The painting is rich in iconographic meanings. The Son of God is depicted in half-length, wearing a red robe, which represents his sacrifice (martyrdom and passion) and royalty, his right hand is raised in blessing while his left rests on a globus cruciger, the world (globe) surmounted by a cross (death and resurrection of Christ). The expression on the face is striking, conveying to the viewer a feeling of profound spirituality and at the same time an intense sensation of peace. Domenico Piola (Genoa 1627-1703) was one of the most important Genoese Baroque painters, and his works are present in churches and palaces of the city as well as in important collections. A painting not to be missed! Dimension: canvas 71.5 x 57 cm - 97 x 83 cm
