Moses closes the waters of the Red Sea - SOLD
Author : Sinibaldo Scorza (1589-1631)
Period: 17th century
This beautiful and unpublished canvas, 46 x 67 cm, can be attributed to the Genoese painter Sinibaldo Scorza, native of Voltaggio (Genoese hinterland); after an initial apprenticeship with Bernardo Carosio from Voltaggio, he moved to Genoa to the workshop of the scholar Giovanni Battista Paggi. He was a multifaceted artist influenced by the Flemish painters working in Genoa in the seventeenth century. Painter, draftsman, miniaturist, engraver, he specialized in representing the "truth" of nature, landscapes, small figures, animals, his inevitable protagonists "Of the painters, who at that time flourished among us, certainly no one in this genre equaled him." (Soprani/Ratti, p. 216) His works tell of ancient fables such as the loves of Pyramus, Medoro and Apollo, Actaeon, Narcissus, Dido and Orpheus who enchants his beloved animals (of which there are repeated versions) but he also told Sacred Stories and this canvas is an example. The biblical episode is described in the Book of Exodus 13.17 – 14.29 and tells of the passage of the Israelites led by Moses who crossed the Red Sea to escape the Egyptians. After the passage took place "The Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea, that the water may come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.” The conservation conditions are excellent, a beautiful and antique gilded frame finishes the work.
