Pair of floral still lifes
Author : Antonio Mezzadri
Period: 17th century
This splendid pair of unpublished paintings, depicting abundant bouquets of flowers, can be stylistically attributed to the painter Antonio Mezzadri, active in Bologna in the second half of the 17th century. Emerging from a dark background, and contrasting with it, is a vast range of cut flowers, creating a colorful and luminous composition. A small snail peeking out from the darkness reminds us of the connection with the earth and the importance of proceeding slowly and consciously. Little is known about the life of this artist, but it is noted that, "In 1688 lived an Antonio Mezzadri, a very talented painter of flowers and fruit, and our city is full of his praiseworthy works" [Felsina pittrice: vite de' pittori bolognesi. Tomo terzo. Alla maestà di Carlo Emanuele III re di Sardegna &c. &c., Rome, 1769, page 30]. The numerous works cited in inventories confirm the appreciation that patrons had for the flourishing painter; studies and the discovery of signed and sealed works are allowing us to discover and catalogue a true master specialized in the pictorial genre of floral still life. The small format allows for easy placement, and the conditions of conservation are excellent. Dimensions: canvas 37 x 52 cm - frame 54.5 x 69 cm
