Flagellation of Christ - SOLD
Author : Domenico Piola (Genova 1627 - 1703)
Period: 17th century
The scene depicted in this beautiful painting is taken from an episode in the life of Jesus narrated in the Gospels, namely the "Flagellation of Christ". At the center of the canvas stands the dramatic figure of a man, a naked body collapsing under the blows of his torturers: hands bound, head bent forward, eyes closed. The armorer holds aloft a torch, and a beam of light projects forward the suffering white figure, all around, hidden and protected in the shadows are his tormentors. The author, the Genoese painter Domenico Piola, has skillfully played with light and shadows to capture the intensity of that moment of torment. A perfectly successful operation and the final result is palpable in the emotion that the painting transmits. Dimensions: canvas 50 x 38 cm - gilded frame 62.5 x 50.5 cm
