Author : Francesco Zugno (Venezia 1709 - 1787)
Period: 18th century
Francesco Zugno, a direct descendant of an ancient family of Venetian painters, is considered an exponent of the Rococo style active in Veneto, Emilia, and Brescia in the 18th century. "The Father, having recognized his inclination, supported his thinking, recommending him to the valorous painter Gio Batta Tiepolo, from whom, being guided by such an excellent Master, he became so enamored of Tiepolo's manner that he attempted to imitate it with all possible diligence" [A. Longhi, Compendio delle Vite De’ Pittori Veneziani, 1762, p. 45]. The collaboration with Tiepolo, which lasted from 1730 to 1737, greatly influenced Zugno's career as a freelancer; he always maintained the Tiepolesque style, reinterpreting it in a personal way, so much so that he is often superficially confused with him, even though he was not a copier. His works recall the typical chromatic range of his Master but prefer the use of a richer impasto, with a greater chromatic intensity and a greater luminous intensity; and in this painting the hand of Zugno is recognizable. The dimensions of the work and the composition with a religious subject, which falls within his typical production, indicate a private devotional destination. The state of preservation is excellent, and the canvas wears an antique frame. Dimensions: canvas 67 x 53 cm - frame 78 x 64.5 cm
