Anton Maria Vassallo (Genoa 1617/18 – Milan 1660) was a successful painter and this splendid painting of ours is a practical example of this. In fact, "the most Flemish of Genoese still life painters" (Anton Maria Vassallo, A. Orlando, Sagep, 1999) used to replicate his paintings as a modus operandi. Two other autograph versions with small variations are known with the same subject published in his monograph (fig. 62 and 63 page 46). Student of Vincent Malò (Cambrai 1602/1606-Rome 1644) “Flemish painter” but “.. he soon became master of the vague, and graceful coloring of the Master, which he had learned from the very famous Rubens” thus the biographer R. Soprani described him in the “Vite de' pittori, scultori, ed architetti genovesi ” (in this second edition revised, increased, and enriched with notes by Carlo Giuseppe Ratti, Tomo primo, 1768-1769, p. 332) and opened his own workshop he painted “oil paintings in large and small format, in which he succeeded marvelously. He had opportunities to do portraits: and he acquired much fame for the resemblance they had to the proposed originals: as was also highly esteemed his expertise in painting flowers, fruits, animals, and landscapes from nature; to become universal in painting” (ibidem, p. 333).
